Get to know the Aloha State
Honolulu is on Oʻahu: this is where you study and your starting point for exploring the area. The currency is the US dollar, and English and Hawaiian are the two official languages.
The previous guide introduces Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Maui and Hawaiʻi. Beaches, trails, rainforests and volcanic landscapes await. Always check current access and local advisories before setting out.
A few words you will hear

Beyond the classroom
Local markets, the beach, a guided walk or a shared activity all offer opportunities to practise conversation. For ocean activities, pay attention to weather and lifeguard warnings; choose open hiking trails appropriate to your ability.

Respect for people and place
- Observe marine wildlife from a distance. Do not touch or feed animals, and follow local distance rules.
- Follow local rules on smoking, alcohol, road safety and sunscreen.
- Check restaurant bills for gratuity and any service charge already included.
- If you receive a lei, accept the gesture respectfully. Do not leave strings or other waste in nature.
